The heart of some of the best mountain and road biking in the Dolomites is in the Alta Badia region. Well known for its numerous steep passes and striking mountain vistas, this area caters specifically to the cyclist in every way. So much so that the area hosts major events such as the famous Maratona dles Dolomites. Imagine 10,000 riders psyched up to challenge the day’s journey of 135 kilometers and approximately 4600 meters of climbing. It is hard to even describe the culture of Italian cycling, especially in the Dolomites.
If one were to sample Dolomite road cycling at its best we recommend cycling the Sellaronda for an awesome introduction. At the center of the Dolomites is the Sella Massive. Each year the area hosts two Sellaronda bike days when the entire road is closed to vehicle traffic. This massive event held in June & September draws some 20,000 cycling enthusiasts who ride 60 kilometers over 4 passes & 1800 meters of climbing for one amazingly beautiful loop.
