A via ferrata is Italian for Iron Path. It is a protected climbing route found in the Alps and certain other locations. They originate from the metal ladders that the soldiers used in WWII to navigate the mountains. The essence of a modern via ferrata is a steel cable which runs along the route and is fixed to a rock in multiple places along the path. The via ferrata allows less practiced mountaineers to experience the magnitude and power of the Dolimite mountain range.
